Why we're building this
The market left solo lawyers behind. We didn't.
Over the past few years, the big practice-management platforms have moved steadily upmarket — chasing larger firms, raising prices, and consolidating. Many solo and small-firm lawyers were left choosing between paying enterprise prices for cloud software they don't fully trust, or running their practice out of folders and spreadsheets.
We think that's backwards. The lawyers with the most sensitive client relationships — criminal defense, family law, immigration — are often the smallest firms, with the least leverage over a cloud vendor's terms and the most to lose from a breach.
So Usus starts from a different premise: a local system that remains useful without a subscription, can add encrypted collaboration when a firm needs it, and is designed around the work and data structures of actual practices.

Four commitments we won't trade away
Your data is yours
Stored on your machine, in open formats, exportable anytime. If Usus vanished tomorrow, your practice wouldn't. We build so that we can't hold your data hostage — not so that we merely promise not to.
Honesty over hype
We'll tell you what Usus does well, what it doesn't do yet, and where competitors are stronger. Lawyers are trained to spot one-sided arguments; we'd rather earn trust than test yours.
AI under supervision
AI in Usus drafts, researches, and organizes — it never practices law. Everything it produces is reviewed by you, and it's built to run locally so confidentiality is architecture, not a promise.
Fair economics
The standalone edition remains free, standard prices stay public, and cancellation should not disable a firm's local practice or trap its records.

A note from the person building it
I'm Lu Jin, the founder building Usus. My experience in the legal industry led me to a broader question: can one coherent system help lawyers run the practice, operate the business, and perform legal work without requiring the vendor to control the firm's data or workflows?
The data model, first-class customization, local architecture, and AI harness all follow from that question. Usus is still in development, and I would rather publish clear limits than imply unfinished features are complete. If you run a small practice, I would like to understand where your current system helps, where it creates work, and what Usus would need to prove before you rely on it.
